About us

We are the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna, a leading academic centre for education, research and innovation that brings together the expertise of the “Aldo Rossi” Faculty of Architecture in Cesena and the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning within the Faculty of Engineering, founded in 1935 and later transformed into the Department of Architecture and Spatial Planning. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach to design, the Department expanded in 2013 to incorporate the discipline of design.

Our identity combines a solid scientific foundation with a strong focus on design. Engineering and technical-scientific expertise interact with design experimentation and with historical-artistic, architectural and theoretical approaches, helping to interpret the complexity of the built environment. This integration is also reflected in the Department’s ability to attract funding for competitive research projects at national and European level, placing it at the forefront of the University in this field.

Ethical and social responsibility guides our teaching and research activities, as well as our engagement with public administrations, businesses and citizens.

We transform knowledge into concrete solutions to contemporary challenges: from environmental sustainability to urban regeneration, right through to innovation in products and services.

The Department operates within the University of Bologna’s Multicampus structure, with branches in Bologna and Cesena, where the main teaching activities take place and the laboratories are based. Having multiple branches fosters dialogue between research, local communities and the region’s industrial sectors.

International dimension

The Department of Architecture is actively establishing networks with universities in countries around the world, with the aim of promoting international collaboration in research and education. In line with the policies of the University of Bologna, the Department offers international mobility opportunities to its students, lecturers and professors, welcomes foreign students, PhD candidates and researchers, is a partner in departmental agreements with international universities and research organisations, and participates in joint research projects and programmes.
