CHANGE

Cultural Heritage, building renovAtioN and urban reGEneration

The CHANGE Lab offers new methods of analysis, interpretation and design tools based on the integration of cultural, technological, environmental, social and economic issues in the design of the rural territory and of the existing built environment of the so-called consolidated city: a city which is in need of continuous and profound renewal in order to guarantee sustainable levels of livability and urban health, by drastically reducing polluting and climate-altering emissions and energy consumption, thus ensuring greater resilience to climate and socio-economic changes.

The research topics in this lab bring together the knowledge of different groups active in the Department of Architecture, which complement and integrate each other in content, scalar dimensions and tools through a common demand and performance-based approach. This approach is no longer only referable to physical and sectoral categories, rather it extends its fields of investigation and design to the topics of land reuse, temporariness, flexibility, safety, efficiency, resilience, in its economic and social dimensions, both collective and individual. This common approach combines the knowledge of the past with new urban, ethical and social dimensions, through the informed and innovative use of tools for the understanding of the dynamics that guide the sectors of industry, building and urban planning.

The topic of research brings together the knowledge of different groups active in the department, which refer to the three Design Culture Innovation labs:

  1. Historical knowledge, representation and strategic vision.
  2. The operational project in its components of analysis, language and communication.
  3. Sustainable construction and technological innovation.
