Programme: CERV Lump Sum Grants
Call: CERV-2023-CITIZENS-REM
All over Europe, dissonant heritage of the 20th century is under discussion. The aim of this project is to develop an inclusive, democratic process to narrate the legacy of undemocratic history and create a methodology which can be used on multiple dissonant heritage sites. The innovative character of this project is in the holistic attitude, which embraces the dissonance to create dialogue, education and remembrance by the use of participatory interpretation, multi-layered research and inclusive communication.
This project consists of four layers. The first layer is a pilot project, which will develop an elaborated narrative and its communication for one of the most striking dissonant heritage sites in Europe, Buzludzha monument, the symbol of communism in Bulgaria. This is the most famous Bulgarian building, which lacks any interpretation, representing the lack of structured discussion on communism in the society.
In a second layer, two case studies will be conducted in parallel, which are facing similar challenges: the fascist mosaics of Collegio Aeronautico in Forli, and the Modelo prison in Barcelona, used for political prisoners during Franco’s dictatorship. The three teams will develop a common methodology, test it and extract usable guidelines for other projects.
The third layer is the involvement of a professional network of dissonant heritage experts called Dissonant Heritage Action Group (DHAG), which emerged from the Urban Agenda for the EU. The group’s participants will set up an Advisory group and will be the direct multiplicator by involving gained knowledge in their dissonant heritage projects.
The fourth layer is the influenced public. By developing the project, there will be eight events through which at least 1000 people will be reached and influenced. Furthermore, through the on-site installation and digital narrative channel for Buzludzha monument the message of the work will reach hundreds of thousands.
